Prickly Pear Herbal

Hi, Geeves again! Maggie is still at her concert, but this post is actually from both of us. Last year, before we became roommates, Maggie and I started looking at starting our own company. (We are still looking, but it’s currently not a feasible business plan) However, we did try a few companies that were new to us, including the Maya Tea Company based in Tuscon, Arizona!

I have got to say, this is one of the nicest online stores. Everything is well organized, the picture quality and descriptions are great, and the teas all have a short video, giving the owner’s thoughts on the tea! They also have amazing service. We mentioned that we were looking to review some teas and I asked if they could recommend some for us, and not only did they recommend some on my list, but they sent us some samples on them of the staff’s favorite teas! It was such a nice gesture, and we were absolutely thrilled about it! And every tea was AMAZING.

Geeves and Maggie’s Tasting Notes:

  • 9/10
  • This tea tasted like candy! Geeves loves cactus taffy when she travels to Tuscon, so she was thrilled.
  • It was lighter than we expected, Maggie was especially impressed at the fact that the hibiscus is not at all overpowering.
  • Super cool thing? The cactus is locally harvested and processed entirely by the Maya staff in Arizona!
  • OMG iced this on the porch this summer? Um, yes.
  • Recently, at a tea party, Geeves’ mom served the remainder of our sample to some friends. Said friend took home the empty package to order more.
  • So yeah, damn good tea.

Prickly Pear

Buy this tea here! Samples (~2 cups) are $1.50, but I’d say go right for the $9.25 quarter pound (~$2.50 per oz, and a total of 4 large pitchers of iced tea, or 40ish hot cups).

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY! If fruity isn’t your thing, consider some of the many others we tried.

Anyway, support small, local businesses! We LOVE Maya, and we don’t care who knows! (Actually, don’t tell Maggie’s boss that we shop at other stores, she’d probably get fired. Just kidding! (not kidding))

XOXO, Maggie and Geeves

Purple Summer Fling

Hello hello, we have been inactive far too long! So we’re back with a vengeance and a lot of teas. Today, you’re stuck with a Geeves coming off an anxiety high, which includes subpar photography.

Today’s tea: Purple Summer Fling! This tea comes to us courtesy of my Seattle trip, from Steepologie teas. I have to be honest, this is one of the nicest stores I’ve ever been in. The walls are lined with shelves of canisters, equipped with tiny bottles to sniff the tea! When you find your tea, bring the canister to the counter and they’ll pack it out for you. They also offer individual cups of any tea! I was the only person in the store, along with one employee, so I felt like the service was good, although she didn’t know very much about the tea I chose, which is understandable because a) she was new, b) there’s like 500 teas, and c) I know a lot more about tea than many people. A word of caution: I have heard that online orders don’t always go well, and customer service RE: shipping is not great. But mostly people like the business, so here we go!

Geeves’ Tasting Notes:

  • Maggie has never had this tea. So these are me, purely on my own here (ahhhhhhh)
  • 8/10
  • This tea is a fruity purple tea. Purple tea is from Kenya, is a new thing, and more info can be found on our technical site, teastory.home.blog.
  • So I came into this thinking it was gonna be like a vibrant purple, but it was a lowkey light pink. Which, for a leaf that looks like black tea, is cool! But it is pink, so the farmers need to learn colors.
  • My qualms about this tea is the ingerdiants: apple, pineapple, rosehips, blueberries, cranberries, orange peel, strawberry slices, elderberry, caledula, lemon myrtle, pina colada extract. It’s A LOT of stuff. So much stuff, I can’t even get individual flavors.

Purple Summer Fling

  • And actually, I fully believed I was getting a strong apricot flavor. There’s not even any apricot! On second consideration, it tastes like canned fruit cocktail in tea. Which I personally would be very interested in having…
  • Anyway, since I gave up drinks with sugar for Lent, this is the sweetest thing I’ve tasted in a while. The tea does give it a little of a sour/bitter note, but not in a bad way. Although it could just be fruit. (I swear to god, the bag is like 50/50, tea and fruit)
  • It’s $16 per 2oz, so that’s steep (because it’s steepologie) but whatever. I’m cool with it, it was a noveltea.
  • In all, it tasted more like a tisane than a tea. But you know who loves tisanes? THIS GIRL. So, I liked it quite a lot.

Here is your link, if you should be interested.

Thanks for joining us!

XO, Geeves (Maggie currently is singing in a concert, whoo!)

Cozy Tea

So at this point you have already heard my Temecula Story, so Ill save myself the proof writing and skip the “How I found this tea” part. Sufface to say, it was my wine substitute.

Anyway, its been pretty chilly here in No Longer Sunny San Diego. (chilly to us california girls at least haha) so Geeves and I decided that this aptly named blend would be an excellent tea to review.

You can find it Here if you are so inspired.

IMG-3639

Geeves’ Thoughts:

  • 6.5/10
  • not super memorable
  • It was good, and there was no awfulness.
  • I drank an entire cup, so theres that.

Maggie’s Thoughts:

  • 7/10
  • It wasn’t particularly memorable, Like nothing that made my socks gain sentience, wings, and a strange urge to see the world.
  • But it is also something that if you put  it in a cup in front of me I would happily sip, hum and patter about good tea.
  • It was nice and smooth, with a lovely hint of a vanilla.
  • the Cinnamon and red peppercorns gave a slight spice to it, that reminded me of a warm fire place, and my grandmas cinnamon candles. (in a good way) making it a very good tea for a cold day.
  • The spice could have stood to be a little stronger. Cause well Ya Girl likes her Tea strong enough to raise a family of five by itself.
  • I would definitely recommend this tea to anyone who wants a simple, warm, and comforting chai tea for the Blustery Times.

TL:DR

  • 6.75/10
  • Not a tea that we would rant and rave about it
  • but an all in all good tea for a cold day.

Well thats all from us Folks!

May your tea cookies be warm, and your favorite cup always be clean.

XOXO Maggie and Geeves

Midnight Blend

Helloooo, Maggie Here. Y’all Ready to  Sparkle!!!! for the full experience, please click here

If you clicked that link, I love you, and you are amazing.

So backstory time.  I got a tea a while back from my sisters boyfriend (Mike you’re cool in my book) and It Sparkled. As a Glam Girl, I loved the aesthetic. Fast forward two weeks, and I ran out, so I mourned, and forgot all about it. But recently when looking at sites to buy tea from I ran across Par Avion. Intrigues by the fancy french name (it means “by airplane”) I checked it out. They had an Entire Section of sparkle teas. I immediately went into “Take My Money” mode and bought the black tea blend, which is what we are reviewing here for you lovely readers.

You can buy it here its a little more pricy at $18 for two ounces. It does come in a nice tin, which justifies it some.

img_3565 (1)

Geeves’ Thoughts:

  • 5/10 on taste
  • 10/10 on novelty
  • My taste score is being generous, in my opinion. The black tea base was decent, but it had a lot of sugar in it, and I don’t like adding sugar to my tea. Sugar masks the bitterness, and if you don’t like the bitter taste of a tea, pick a different one!
  • The pigment was beautiful. I loved the sheen, and I showed it off to everyone I could.
  • Would I serve it for a party? 100% yes. Would I make it to drink alone? Probably not.

Maggie’s Thoughts:

  • So Im very conflicted. So Im going to rate this tea in two separate categories. Aesthetic and Taste
    • Aesthetic : 10/10
      • This is a gorgeous tea, loose and brewed.
      • The tea blend is a black tea base, with little tiny gold sugar-balls and sprinkles, which makes for a beautiful contrast, especially in the black tin it comes in.
      • Brewed it is still very pretty. You don’t see the sparkles at first. But with a closer look you see clouds of sparkles with the hints of larger sprinkles swirling around in your cup. truly reminiscent of a midnight sky.
      • Put this in a glass tea pot or carafe, and you have a wonderful tea to set at the dinner table, under some good lights.
    • Taste: 5/10
      • I’m going to be perfectly honest. taste-wise this tea was pretty average.
      • It didn’t really have anything that stood out and made me go WOWZA, The black tea had a bit a malt to it, but it was easily overwhelmed by sugar. And the sugar-balls meant that there was an added sugar, of which I’m not the  biggest fan. I work in a tea shop, so I’ve been broken of the habit of adding sugar, unless its a desert tea. (In those cases I occasionally throw the Decorum Book at a wall, and think Treat Yo Self 2019, and throw in some cream and sugar. Its the simple things in life. )
      •   So though I wouldn’t Not serve it. its more of a novelTEA thing. Like wow cool it sparkles.( and it was super cool, catch me telling all my friends that my Tea Sparkles)
      • Maybe if I blended it with another tea it would get bumped up the rating scale, but by itself, it comes at a solid 5/10.
        • (side note, I blended this with some vanilla tea I have and it went really well with that. so that might be an option if you want both aesthetic and taste.)
  • TLDR:
    • 5/10 on Taste
    • full marks for the  #Looke and Flair though
    • A very lovely conversation tea, but not one to seek out for taste.

Well thats it on this tea. Message us if you try it, and what you think! we’d love to see how you find it. May Your Lives be full and Your TeaCups be Fuller.

xoxo Maggie and Geeves.

Bohea Tea

Prequel: I was driving my sister to a party. We were early, so we stopped at the mall, and there was a tea shop that had just opened. It was Spice and Tea Exchange. the prices looked fair, not crazy cheap. So I grabbed this tea, because it didn’t look like anything I had had before. Later that night, we though maggie had died, and I would be running this blog alone. We found she was not dead, just on a very long date. So we steeped it up, and loved it.

The company is here

and you can find this tea at $6.28 per ounce.

IMG_20190121_152948_331.jpg

Geeves’ Notes

  • 10/10
  • I love it, I would die for it
  • Its smokey, its sweet, it has a hint of spice.
  • It is everything I could want in a tea.
  • Also it tastes way better than it smells.

Maggie’s Notes

  • So I was gonna to rate this a 8.89/10 but Geeves said that was too much math and to #Not
  • So I Rounded up to a 9/10 sadly compromising my judging capabilities, Sad my dudes.
  • Buy anyway heres the tea, So I really really, Like REALLY enjoyed this blend.
  • It was smokey and had just the hint of cinnamon, and orange to it.
  • Its actually very  similar to one of my favorite teas, lapsang souchong, so it definitely got into my good graces
  • Now some of you might be asking, “But Maggie Dearest Why Does this amazing smokey spice tea not a 10/10 if you love it so much” and I would respond
    • Why thank you so much for asking. Its very similar to a Lapsang Souchong. So much so that at first I though Geeves had just added a tad bit of cinnamon to a cup of it. And while I love it, I wish there was a little bit more to differentiate it from Lapsang.
  • Over all though its not that big of a point, because I still loved it. Hence the rounded up 9/10

TL:DR

  • 9.5/10
  • A lovely blend. A perfect cup for those who need a Smokey Drink in their lives

Much love to all you readers. May your tea never burn your mouth, and always be the right strength!

Jade Snail Tea

Howdy Y’all! This is Maggie, here to introduce you to another fun new tea. Now if you follow our instagram (@herestheteasd you should :o) you saw that we got a fun shipment of new teas. This Interestingly named tea is one of those! We found the company through instagram actually. They liked our post, and geeves and I went, ‘Hey Tea, Thats Cool!’ so we got some, because we have no self control, Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

We chose this one mainly because we thought “Hey we do mostly black tea so far, lets switch it up!” and the name sounded really fun.

The Company is Here I would recommend checking them out.

Geeves’ Thoughts:

  • 6/10
  • Frankly it was an above average green tea
  • But there wasn’t much to it, no florals, no spice. It was just green tea.
  • It was so traditional that even TJ, our boring tea friend who thinks Genmaicha is too saucy, likes it. He did say it was great though. So a good choice for the traditional drinker.

Maggie’s Thoughts

  • 9/10! Wow , This fell so high above my expectations, color me surprised.
  • But in all seriousness this was all that I look for in a Traditional green tea.
  • The rolled form of it lent itself to resteeping very well, and it never felt to bitter
  • Because ya girl maggie doesnt do bitter. Strong tea?–> Yes. Bitter Tea?–> Yeah no im gone. So this Tea really hit the spot as a solid green tea, that was nice and smooth with a hit of a grassy finish.
  • It didn’t have any peaks or off-putting astringencies, and it really won me over.
  • There wasn’t anything extra, like floral, or herbaceous notes. And i actually really appreciated that. I love, Love flavored teas, don’t get me wrong. But occasionally its nice to have just a nice smooth and simple cup of tea.
  • Wow as a Black Tea Girl who would have thought that such a high score  would be given to a traditional green tea. I am Officially Shook.
  • That all from me folks, Im going to wander my apartment attempting to find reason in the universe again( with a cup of this tea of course) Toodles. xoxo

TL:DR

  • 7.5/10
  • A simple traditional tea, nice and smooth with a grassy finish.

Tea Tales of the Alhambra

Fun name, isn’t it? Howdy folks, Maggie here. So this scrumptious cup of leaf juice

68bjj5n
an offended Iroh for my fellow Avatar fans

was actually a gift I received from some awesome family friends, shout out to the Guptas. If you guys are reading this, you’re awesome and you have wonderful taste in tea! They brought this back from their Europe travels and I just felt like Geeves’ and I had to share it with you lovely readers.  We chose this one today because we felt like its Earl Grey base matched the lovely foggy and grey weather we’ve been having here in  Usually Pretty Sunny San Diego, and the hibiscus tang matched the beachy vibe we still have here at school. So with that said, who’s ready to review some tea!? I am!! (Probably wouldn’t be much of a blog if we weren’t, but that’s beside the point.)

This one is not very expensive at 4 dollars an Ounce. found here

93381897-bdf7-44b2-a461-021c674e7937.jpeg

Maggie’s Notes:

  • I’mma give this one a fantastic 9/10, can I get a YeeHaw?!
  • Honestly, I really don’t like hibiscus. It usually ranks on the Personal Grudge Status. Like, me and hibiscus got in a fight at 3am in the Denny’s parking lot and we haven’t reconciled since. But this tea, thought not making me a believer, makes me over look that grudge for an exception.
  • The Earl Grey base paired really well with the tartness of the hibiscus.
  • Also, this one can do it all. I tried it over ice, and whoooo boi, it was good. The rose came out a little bit more, and the tartness of the hibiscus was refreshing.
  • My reason for this one not being a 10/10 is that the combination of black and green tea, while resulting in a lovely lightness to contrast the normal strength of an Earl Grey, meant that it was hard to steep correctly, and I felt like I couldn’t really steep it for as long as the company recommended without the green tea getting bitter and burnt.
  • But that’s not a deal breaker, just steep it for a little less time and boom, we’re golden.

Geeves’ Notes

  • 6/10 (8/10 on flavor but see below)
  • Side note, Maggie said “we” picked this tea today, no, I picked it. I asked her for the fanciest Earl Grey she had because it was grey where we were going to be doing our photoshoot. 😛
  • This is nice. It has an herby taste, which I enjoy, and the hibiscus is pretty nice in this fresh take on an Earl Grey.
  • However, you can only get this tea shipped to Spain and Portugal. So while I’d probably drink it again if it was offered, it won’t be offered unless I send a buddy to Granada to pick it up for me. And that is why it is a 6/10, because essentially I can’t purchase it again.
  • This also is not great as a hot tea. I left mine on the patio for a while because of an accident I had during the photoshoot (I cut my foot open), so I had it chilled from the rain, and I liked that. When given a hot cup afterwards, I was not as thrilled about it. Hence the lower rating.

View here at Aromas de al Andalus (shipping only available to Spain and Portugal).

And with that we leave you, my good tea drinkers. May you never grow sick of your favorite blend.

Churchmouse Spring

Hello from Geeves! I collected this tea on my Seattle trip, on a little island called Bainbridge. 10/10 travel destination, we took the ferry over on a beautifully clear day and while still cold because Seattle winters are like that, I had no problems with the weater! Up the main street, we stopped in a cute bookstore, and I asked where I could get some great tea. They recommended Churchmouse Yarns and Teas, and I picked their Spring blend because it looked the most rare and interesting. It did not disappoint!

img-3362
We’re not the photography-talented people of our apartment, so this is actually extremely good work for us!

Geeves’ Notes:

  • 9.5/10
  • A really nice green tea blend! We chose to drink this tea a couple nights ago because we really wanted to put something in Maggie’s green cast iron cups, and it was a very solid choice.
  • I adore floral teas! Jasmine is my favorite, no doubts about it, and this being a Jasmine blend made me so happy. It’s such a light tea, and I could definitely drink a whole pot of it alone. I will definitely reorder, the price is great at $14 per 4oz bag!

Maggie’s Notes:

  • A whopping 9.5/10 from me folks.
  • So I really enjoyed this blend, obviously! There was just a hint of citrus. I’ve had some teas where the lemon came to my door and punched me out. And this was decidedly not that. It was like I saw the lemon at a coffee shop and we talked a little about how life has changed before parting amicably to go about the rest of our days. The smooth citrus note really complemented this blend.
  • The tea base itself was very smooth. So, very in line with what you find on a Chinese green tea base.
  • There was a hint of something floral/sweet from the elder flower, like Jasmine with something else. The floral hint did well to smooth out the citrus even more and leave a fresh “I can muster up the strength to face this cruel world again” feeling.
  • So overall I loved this blend. It goes amazingly hot, but also works wonders as an iced blend. I left .5 out of a perfect score if only because i would have liked the tea base to be the tiniest of tad bits stronger. And as said by Draco Malfoy in a Very Potter Musical, “there’s always room for improvement”
  • I’m so very sorry that I couldn’t find the gif for that quote, but take this one instead.tumblr_osuusxeo821vppjrzo1_400

TLDR:

  • 9.5/10! Our highest rating yet.
  • Tasting notes: floral green with a hint of citrus.
  • Price: great, $14/4oz
  • Recommendation: Yes, buy this! Support small business and local blenders.

Purchase here from a small business in Washington! They also sell great yarn if you like to knit.

Happy drinking, and we hope you get a chance to try this delightful blend!

Exotic Wedding

Geeves here! No, an exotic wedding is not where we went to this weekend. Maggie went home and I did a massive amount of homework (I’m halfway through the semester in terms of homework).

img-3180

No, this tea is called Exotic Wedding, from the Old Town Spice and Tea Merchants. Featuring lemon, rosebud, and vanilla on Mutan white tea, this light tea is exactly like a spring wedding. We actually got really excited about the photoshoot possibilities, we almost forgot to drink it! That was quickly remedied.

IMG-3227.jpg

In all seriousness, I thought this was a really nice tea. I can see myself hiding a bag of it in my purse to take to a wedding, and scouring the bar for a lemon slice to toss in.

(Hi This Is Maggie) this is another one of the teas I got on my Wine And Cheese Extravagansa  (see last post). And we thought it would be fun, since we are both Single College Girls, to stage a Wedding photo shoot…As you do.(so no we are not getting married) We each had our own take on the Wedding Theme. I went with a traditional wedding look. img_3208

Geeves’ Went with a Looke inspired by our favorite band HighStressLevelsOnThe DanceFloor. img_3309

She Chimed in with a “Haven’t you people ever heard of spilling some GoshDarned Tea”, I said “No, its much better to face these kinds of Things with a sense of Poise and Rationality”

Geeves’ Thoughts:

  • 9/10
  • One thing I’ll be honest about it that when I drink tea, I irrationally expect it to taste strongly of whatever is in it. So this I expected to be a teaspoon of vanilla extract, with a strong rose smell and a squeeze of lemon, inside some white tea base. And obviously, that’s not how tea works! But I was actually impressed with how much flavor I could get out of the tea.
  • Instead of vanilla taste and rose smell, I actually felt like it went the other way. I got a lot of vanilla smell, with a good rose aftertaste. And for the first time ever: I tasted citrus in my tea.
  • For $5ish an ounce, it’s pricier than what we’ve been buying, but I like it and it’s still a good value.

Maggie’s Thoughts:

  • a Solid 8/10 from me folks
  • A really lovely floral blend
  • I got more of like a Vanilla, with like a smidgen of that goodgood rose, and just a hint of lemon. which is Not what I expected when I bought the tea, but a pleasant surprise. To be over 9000% honest, I really was not expecting to like this tea. Usually I’m not a fan of flavored white tea, but this one took me by surprise. ( in a good way, not like a Surprise… You’re Dead way)
  • My little detractor is that I would have liked a little more rose flavor. I really dig them florals so twas a little more Vanilla-y then I would normally choose.
  • Its a good tea for late at night. As you probably have realized our last couple teas have been Black Teas. so loooots of that good good No Sleep Juice. Add that to the prednisone I was taking, and sleep and I went from Good Friends to a dysfunctional pair of mortal enemies who both loathe but want each other. And This tea Does Not Do that. so sleep and I shall be on better terms tonight.
  • A little more expensive that the others teas. but they are sold by weight, and white tea is far less dense than like any other tea (excluding herbals) so I got a lot more leaves in one Oz in this one than any of the other teas I got. So with that in mind the price difference does make some sense.

Purchase here.

Happy drinking!-G

Florence Blend

Hi There! This is Maggie, yep you don’t always get Geeves’ clean writing. Tonight it is Maggie Story Time. So I found this tea over the winter break, when I so generously volunteered to be the Designated Driver for my sister and her boyfriends Wine Tasting Trip. Though at first glace this  may not seem like an amazing use of time, I did end up really enjoying it for many reasons. The second most being the Old Town Tea and Spice, in Old Town Temecula. (for those of you wondering, the first reason is that all of us being youngins, we didn’t want to eat the overpriced winery food. And Katie and Mike definitely did not want to go an entire day drinking with no food. Which led to us lugging around an Entire Wheel of Cheese to all these fancy wineries. It was worth a giggle and a half to watch the manager try to tactfully tell us that it was tacky to BYOCheese)

Old Town Tea and Spice was a cute little shop nestled in the Old Town district, but fifteen minutes away from the wineries. They got me there with the promise of a large tea selection, and kept me with their affordable prices, and buy 10oz get one free. This particular tea drew my eye with the fun name, and once I saw that one of the main notes was chocolate I just had to give it a try.

Here’s the Store for all you Funky Little Tea Drinkers:

Old Town Spice and Tea Merchants

img-3120Maggie’s Thoughts:

  • 8.5/10
  • This one gets a high number from me for the lovely and smooth chocolate taste, without it being too sweet. It was a good dose of CHoCOlaTE (cue Spongebob screaming meme “dID YoU SaY ChOColATE!!”), without the feeling like I needed a dentist appointment immediately afterwards.
  • The tea base was strong and could definitely hold up to milk if you wanted a creamier flavor, though honestly it doesn’t need it. But, I am one of those weird heathens who likes 87-92% dark chocolate, so if you want to sweeten I promise I will not judge.
  • The price was also pretty good. At $4 an oz you get a decent amount of tea, and this is one to re-steep.
  • My one little gripe would be that in the notes it did claim to have a hazelnut hint to it. And I didn’t really feel like I got that. I went in expecting Nutella and Came out with dark chocolate. I ain’t even mad, BUT I understand that some would be a Tad Miffed, a Bit Peeved, A Smidge Irate, if they were looking for a sweeter note.
  • Overall, would buy again, and I would recommend it for fixing that chocolate urge that we all get at one in the morning, the one that leaves you wondering “to be (a gremlin) or not to be (a gremlin). Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of The Chocolate Cravings or to take arms against a sea of hungers and by indulging end them. To eat—to chocolate”… yeah no that’s all the Hamlet I have in me for today. That’s all folks!
     img-3126

Geeves’ Thoughts:

  • 7/10
  • I drank this and immediately needed to sleep. Maybe it’s because it’s late. Maybe because there’s a lot of caffeine and no sweetness. IDK.
  • I’m a little disappointed, because I wanted this to be a dessert tea and it really wasn’t. It was cacao chunks and black tea, neither of which I am a huge fan of. I ate it with a bittersweet chocolate cake, which I think helped me because I was already in a not-sweet chocolate mindset, but I’d probably be unsatisfied if I drank it as my dessert.
  • Maggie and I have very different tea tastes, so I’m not surprised that she liked this! It’s not my jam, so I probably wouldn’t buy it, but at $4 per oz online I wouldn’t tell you not to. And if Maggie gives me another cup at some point in time, it’s not like I’d say no…
  • Also, even thought Maggie did write the majority of this post, I did my best to edit for y’all, you’re welcome 😉 (Yes, this is REALLY an edited post.)

TLDR:

  • Rating: 7.75/10
  • Tasting Notes: black tea with a bittersweet chocolate note.
  • Pricing: Fair, $4/oz
  • Recommendation: A ConrTEAversial blend, depending on your pallet.

Purchase here if it catches your fancy!

We hope you have enjoyed, and that you all can now go forth and steep your leaves!

Much Love,

Maggie And Geeves’
